The spread of high speed a. k.a. broadband internet part 2

The price of broadband internet access has dropped dramatically over the past five years. Many people who could not afford broadband internet access now realize that by just spending about ten to twenty dollars more a month they can upgrade from dial-up internet access to broadband internet access.

This drop in price has been enough for people to look for an alternative to the slow, unresponsive, and very unreliable service that most of us became accustomed to while using dial-up. One of the main reasons that the price has dropped so much is that new technologies have been developed to allow broadband internet access to be enjoyed in more places. Also the infrastructure of many companies has been extended to allow service to be available to more people.

Probably the biggest reason for the spread of broadband internet access is the increase of availability. Many people wanted broadband internet when they first heard about it, but it was not available in their area. While we still have a very long way to go, the United States is starting to build an infrastructure that will allow broadband internet access to almost anywhere in the country.

One of the best things about broadband internet is that once it has been extended into an area, the price to distribute it to other people in the area is much lower. Most of the money has already been spent to get the infrastructure close enough to major population areas, that the cost to supply it to users in those areas is now very small.

Another reason the availability of broadband internet access has grown so much lately is that many different types of broadband is now available. These technologies include DSL, cable, wireless, and even satellite and GSM networks. The competition between these different companies has also helped to “hype” broadband internet access, and drive prices down. Broadband internet access is only going to get faster and spread more, so we need to embrace these new technologies or we will be left behind.

Online stock trading - stock trading strategies

The ease of online stock trading draws the attention of new investors and investors looking for an alternative to the old methods of trading. With little more than an account and a mouse fortunes can be made or lost from the privacy of one’s own home. However, before getting carried away, investors should look into the basics of stock trading strategies to help protect themselves from what can be a very tempting albeit confusing world of internet stocks.

The only consistent notion about stocks is that they are inconsistent. Investors that make decisions based entirely on emotional “gut feelings” or make decisions based on desperation will only do about as well as they will at the casino. Planned, precise, and well thought out decisions make for strong trades. Online stock trading need not be a random roll of the dice.

Regardless of any pre-planned strategy that an online investor approaches the online trading world with, there are two basic entities that need to built into any strategy. All trading is based on maximizing the profits while minimizing the risks. These two factors also tend to cancel each other out. The greatest risks usually turn the greatest profits while the smallest risks typically turn tiny but long term profits. This means that an individual investor needs to find their individual risk tolerance while building their strategy.

There will be losses. There’s no strategy in the world that can guarantee online stock trading without loss. Loss is part of the game no matter how serious the player. The most successful online stock traders in the world have one basic rule implemented into their trading strategy. They all have their stock portfolio divided into percentages. They have a predetermined percentage seeking high risk, high return stocks, a predetermined percentage seeking medium risk, medium return stocks, and a predetermined percentage seeking low risk, low return stocks. The predetermined percentages vary from investor to investor and some have the bulk of their percentages in low risk while others have the bulk in medium risk. Placing the bulk of the available funds in high risk stocks is a sign of either gambling or desperation, neither one is considered a very sound strategy.

The reason that these percentages are predetermined for the vast majority of successful online investors is to help maintain unemotional investing. If there is a set amount of the available funds doing predetermined job, then the emotional windfalls and shortcomings are incapable of moving the percentages around. Online stock trading can become emotional, and when it does online traders start making bad decisions based on their emotions. Keeping the emotional trading to a nonexistent minimum is very difficult for many online traders, but it is also on of the best laid online stock trading strategies there is.

Every individual investor’s strategy will vary to suit their needs, their risk tolerance, and their individual style. However, having a basic strategy before the account is even opened is a vital key to online stock trading. Investors without a strategy tend to lose more often than they succeed. Every individual investor’s emotional strings are different, and some will need firmer, more complicated rules before setting off into the online investment world. Others will do fine with a basic outline. While learning the ropes, it is best to dabble with small sums of money rather than place large chunks of money into any stock, no matter how good it seems. One of the most significant pros to online stock trading is the investor’s ability to go through the motions on paper without ever spending a dime while they keep an eye on the stocks they believe they are interested in. Over time, online stock trading can become a very healthy form of secondary or even primary income, but the investor has to start with a plan.

encouraged to work at your own pace, never requiring anything more than you have

to give at that particular moment. Yoga is completely for yourself. Practice can

be as intense or as simple as you need it to be. Yoga teachers never push you to

do more than you can do. It's completely your practice, your 30 minutes - 1 1/2

hours (depending on the type of yoga) you are giving to yourself. It is a gift

to you!

When your mind is able to concentrate fully on your yoga practice the

unification of body, mind, and spirit takes place. This is the beneficial

intention of practicing yoga. There are many situations where you may be

keep you awake even at night. Your sleep deprived, stressed, and miserable.

There aren't any immediate solutions and most of your time is spent worrying.

Your mind is so preoccupied and full of difficulties. You are no longer living

sound familiar? Do you question yourself about being depressed? You may find

yourself taking those quizzes in the doctor's office and notice you answered

"yes" to most of them.

Yoga is a great tool for an overactive mind and alleviating depression. Yoga

when practiced properly, quiets the mind and develops peace and tranquility for

the mind and body. You should try making yoga practice a daily routine in your

life. Dealing with life's difficulties and a unsettled mind will seem less

stressful. You will be better prepared to deal with these problems through

greater mental control and patience. If you looking for something to help you

better deal with stress while improving your physical body through toning,

strengthening and conditioning you cannot go wrong beginning a yoga program.

A yoga program can help you find solutions to problems you may have never

considered. Deep concentration and breathing during yoga develops amazing

listening skills, patience and relaxation allowing your mind to empty. You will

find yourself in a quieter place.

What you should know about stomach gas problems

Although the mention of stomach gas problems, such as belching, flatulence, bloating and “gas pains” often elicits some degree of amusement, all of us have gas in our intestinal tract and must expel it in some way.

Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of gas collections in the stomach and intestinal tract and may develop significant discomfort.

If such complaints are troublesome and persistent and do not respond to simple measures, such as change in diet, a visit to your doctor could be helpful.

The gas brought back by belching comes entirely from swallowed air. We all swallow some air when eating food and drinking liquids. Most of the gas mixes with the stomach content and either enters into the small intestine or is belched back.

The air that enters the small intestine is either absorbed or it may continue through to the large intestine and is then passed rectally. Individuals may swallow more air (and thus increase stomach gas) if they have a post-nasal drip, chew gum, have poorly fitting dentures, suck on hard candies or smoke tobacco. Drinking carbonated beverages (soda or beer) or eating rapidly can also increase stomach gas.

The food we choose to eat can influence the amount of gas passed rectally. Although most of our food intake is absorbed in the small intestine, some foods, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, baked beans, and bran are incompletely digested.

They are then broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, causing the formation of gas. A high roughage diet is important to promote bowel regularity, but excessive roughage or fiber may lead to bloating and increased flatulence.

When increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, do so gradually, allowing your intestinal tract time to adjust. Milk sugar (lactose) requires an intestinal enzyme (lactase) for digestion. When individuals lack this enzyme the lactose in milk and other dairy products enters the large intestine where the lactose is broken down by bacteria, producing gas.

Although milk is an excellent source of protein and calcium, many adults experience abdominal bloating, gas and diarrhea after consuming milk sugar. Persons from Asia and Africa are often extremely intolerant to the smallest

quantity of dairy products.

Everyone passes some rectal gas, although the volume of gas is different each day. Much of the flatus comes from the nitrogen found in the air one swallows. The remainder of the flatus volume is the result of carbohydrates which are not absorbed in the small intestine and are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine.

Therefore, the amount of flatus represents a combination of swallowed air and poorly absorbed carbohydrates. The unpleasant order of flatus is due to other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by the bacteria.

Individuals with a long history of occasional gaseousness and abdominal discomfort need not seek medical attention. A change in the location of abdominal pain, significant increase in the frequency or severity of symptoms, or onset of new symptoms in individuals over the age of 40 are some of the reasons to see your doctor.

How to pour the perfect glass of wine

To pour the perfect glass of wine you must take several steps:

Temperature Of The Wine:

The temperature at which a wine is served makes an immense impact on its taste. Serving wine while cool will mask some imperfections which is good for younger or cheaper wines. However, a warmer wine temperature allows a more full expression of the wine's characteristics which is favourable when serving an an older or more expensive wine.

A bottle of wine will cool at about 2 °C (4 °F) for every ten minutes in the fridge, and it will warm at about this same rate when removed and left at room temperature. Obviously, the temperature of the room will affect the speed with which the wine warms up. If you need to chill a bottle of wine quickly, 35 minutes in the freezer will do the trick. Just don't forget to take the bottle out!

Decanting The Wine:

Decanting is pouring wine into a container before serving. Decanting is typically only required with older wines or Ports, which contain sediment that can add bitterness to the wine.

Wine decanters may improve the flavor of older red wines.

Younger wines also benefit from the aeration that decanting provides. Of course, a wine decanter may also be used simply for aesthetic reasons.

Before decanting a wine that contains sediment, allow the bottle to rest upright allowing any sediment to sink to the bottom. Then slowly pour the wine into the decanter keeping the bottle angled so that no sediment makes its way into the decanter. The wine may be poured through cheesecloth to assist in filtering out any unwanted particles. Decanting wine should be done out of sight of any guests.

Pouring The Wine:

Still wines should be poured towards the center of the glass, while sparkling wines should be poured against the side, like a beer, so that unwanted bubbles do not show up.

To control drips, one can twist the bottle slightly while tilting it upright. When pouring wine, glass should be filled no more than two-thirds. This will allow guests to swirl the wine and smell the bouquet. A glass can always be refilled if desired. Of course, serve wine to the women and older guests first, then the men and end with your own glass.

Types Of Wine Glasses:

As important as serving temperature is the type of glass in which wines are served. The shape of a wine glass can affect the taste of the wine, and for this reason different types of wine are served in specific glasses. The three main types of wine glasses are as follows:

White wine glasses : shaped like a tulip

Red wine glasses : rounded with large bowl

Sparkling wine flutes : tall and thin

A suitable all-purpose wine glass should hold about ten ounces and be transparent to allow the taster to examine the color of the wine as well as its body Moreover, it should have a slight curve in at the top to hold in the bouquet. While an all-purpose wine glass is fine for serving a red wine, be sure not to serve a white wine in a red wine glass.

Lose body fat and sculpt lean muscle with this brief and effective workout

Warning: this style of workout is WAY different than anything you've ever tried before and may result in a dramatically leaner, stronger body so that your friends no longer recognize you in a matter of weeks!

Alright, I exaggerated about your friends recognizing you, but this workout is still great for busy people that always use the excuse that they don't have time to go to the gym, or even for the normal gym rat to try out for a few weeks to break out of a plateau.

Please keep an open-mind and don't worry so much about what other people think, because this is quite different and you may get some funny looks, but you'll get the last laugh with your new rock hard body! To be honest, most people are too self conscious to try something like this. If that's the case for you, then that's your loss.

Here's how it works:

Instead of doing your traditional workouts of going to the gym 3-4 times a week and doing your normal weight training and cardio routines for an hour at a shot, with this program, you will be working out for just a couple minutes at a time, several times throughout each day, 5 days/week.

The program will consist of only bodyweight exercises done for about 2-3 minutes, 6-8 times per day, throughout each day. Now obviously if you work a normal office job, you are going to have to not be shy about doing a few exercises in your office and having your cube-mates watch you. Actually, I've found that some people that have tried this have actually gotten their co-workers to join them! If you have a private office, then you don't have to worry about anybody watching you. If you work from home, or are a stay at home mom, there's no reason you can't fit these in throughout the day while at home. If you end up having a busy day with meetings and so forth, and can only fit a couple of these 2-minute workouts in, then so be it, but try to get as many done each day as you can.

If you're on a normal 9-5 office schedule, I recommend doing your 2-minute workouts every hour, on the hour, with the exception of lunch. For example, you could try 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, and 4 pm.

Some of the exercises that are the best to focus on are:

-bodyweight squats (and variations)

-pushups (and variations)

-forward, reverse, or walking lunges

-up & down a staircase if one is available

-floor planks (holding plank position from forearms and feet)

-floor abs exercises such as lying leg thrusts, ab bicycles, etc.

-one-legged bodyweight Romanian deadlifts

This list is not fully comprehensive, but I wanted to keep it relatively simple. If you know other good bodyweight exercises, you can add those to your routine also. If you want to keep it real simple and don't want to get down on the floor for anything, you can stick to squats, lunges, and pushups and still get great results.

The good thing about these workouts is that you do enough in 2-3 minutes to get your blood pumping, heart rate up a bit, a large portion of your body's muscles worked, and your body temperature raised. However, it's usually not enough to break a sweat in only 2 or 3 minutes, so you don't have to worry about sweating or getting smelly in the office or where ever you may be. At most, you might just get a little moist on the skin.

Here's an example routine (adjust the reps up or down based on your capabilities):

Mon/Wed/Fri

9 am - 10 pushups/15 bodyweight squats, repeat 1X for 2 sets

10 am - plank holds (hold the planks as long as you can taking short rest breaks for a total of 3 minutes)

11 am - 5 pushups/10 bodyweight squats, repeat for 4 sets

1 pm - plank holds (hold as long as possible in 3 minutes)

2 pm - 8 pushups/12 bodyweight squats, repeat for 3 sets

3 pm - plank holds (hold as long as possible in 3 minutes)

4 pm - max pushups/max bodyweight squats in one set (no repeat)

Tues/Thurs

9 am - 6 fwd lunges each leg/6 rev lunges, repeat 1X for 2 sets

10 am - one legged bw Romanian deadlifts (RDL) 6 each leg/floor abs for 20 sec, repeat 1X for 2 sets

11 am - 3 fwd lunges each leg/3 rev lunges, repeat for 4 sets

1 pm - one legged bw RDL 3 each leg/floor abs for 20 sec, repeat for 4 sets

2 pm - 5 fwd lunges each leg/5 rev lunges, repeat for 3 sets

3 pm - one legged bw RDL 10 each leg/floor abs for 30 sec (no repeat)

4 pm - max fwd lunges each leg/max rev lunges in one set (no repeat)

In order to progress on these workouts, you could either add 1 or 2 reps to each set per week, or you could progress to more difficult versions of each exercise each week (for example, close grip pushups, one leg raised pushups, squats with arms raised straight over head, etc.).

The above routines are just a couple examples of how you can use this very unique style of training. Use your creativity and come up with your own. Think about what you've accomplished with these "mini" workouts completed throughout each day... You've increased your heart rate and pumped up your muscles 6-8 different times throughout each day, burning a lot of extra calories and stimulating your metabolism. Even though each "mini" workout was a very short duration, you've accumulated lots of repetitions for almost every muscle throughout your entire body, and you didn't even have to break a sweat during any of the "mini" workouts. And there's hardly any excuse for not being able to take a 2-minute break once per hour and do a couple of exercises. Another benefit of this style of training is that now you don't have to devote any time before or after work to going to the gym because you already got your workout done little by little throughout the day. You've now got some extra free time on your hands!

Try this type of routine out for 3-4 weeks and then go back to your normal gym routines. I think you'll find that it was a great way to break out of a plateau and stimulate new results in your body. You can try mixing in a cycle of these "mini" workouts every couple of months to keep things fresh.

Keep in mind that this is only one method of training and doesn't mean that you should only stick to this method for eternity. You will hit a plateau on any given training method, so I'd recommend just rotating it into your arsenal of various training methods. And by all means, don't worry about what other people think so much...have the courage to try something a little different. In the end, you'll be the one laughing back at all of the "blubber-bellies" that are giving you funny looks while they eat their donuts!

Credit card alternatives

Credit cards are extremely convenient, but extremely costly. For those that would like the convenience of a credit card without the high costs involved there are many alternatives. Below, you will find a few.

Debit Cards

Debit cards have taken America by storm. They are extremely convenient just like credit cards without the high interest fees. Debit cards are credit cards that use your bank account instead of an unsecured loan provided by a credit card company. Debit cards are extremely easy to use, are usually accepted everywhere a normal credit card is accepted and does not charge any interest for purchases.

The beauty of debit cards is that they use your checking account making it easy to refill your balance. Many credit cards come with online banking making it easy to keep tabs on your balance and easy to transfer money from another account to refill your checking account. Debit cards usually are very economical and cost nothing at the point of purchase to use. While some banks do charge a yearly or monthly fee, these fees are typically low and much more cost effective compared to high credit card interest fees.

Paypal for Online Purchases

For those that shop online, instead of using a credit card, look into other payment options such as Paypal. Paypal is very secure and uses your bank account or even debit card to make purchases online. Instead of giving a credit card number to a merchant, your bank account or debit card account information is securely held on Paypal’s network. Paypal pays the merchant directly, this way you never have to transfer bank or card information to unknown merchants. Paypal is also free to use for consumers.

Gift Cards

Instead of using a credit card, you can also use gift cards to make purchases. In fact, there are even Visa and American Express gift cards which can be used at practically all locations that accept these credit cards normally. The way these prepaid gift cards work is that you pay for a specific amount on the gift card upfront. This way you don’t have to pay any interest fees later on. Gift cards are mostly used for holiday gift giving, but many parents are now using these cards as tools to teach their kids how to use credit cards wisely.

With so many other alternatives, your high interest credit cards and the debt they can cause can be a thing of the past.

How to become a qualified domestic energy assessor

A UK energy inspector must take a series of lectures, workshops and hands-on training to pass the testing and earn the diploma as domestic energy assessor.

For those who have not had any practical training as an energy inspector, one of the course packages offered by the NHER sets aside the classroom lecture method and involves one day of workshops broken up into small groups and one day of home energy assessment visits.

No more than 15 can participate in these energy courses, as the workshops must be interactive for all. The emphasis here will be the survey of actual homes, the use of the real EPC software and the production of actual Energy Performance Certificates.

What the novice energy inspector will learn is an understanding of the various government-regulated RDSAP conventions, and the how-tos of measuring and recording property dimensions with accuracy.

The candidates will also learn how to identify residential construction elements correctly and to record their descriptions. As an energy inspector theyll need to be able to identify and to record the safety and health risks of each property, to and by the occupants.

This course will teach that, as well as the steps for entering data into online Energy Performance Certification software. After an energy inspector candidate completes this course she or he should be able to actually produce and EPC and to recommend to owners the various measures they can implement and products they can introduce to improve their dwellings energy efficiency.

All domestic energy assessor candidates, whether they have energy inspector experience or not, must take the last component of NHER energy inspection training. Included are two days that include workshops in small interactive groups and a survey.

This energy inspector training should consolidate all energy inspection knowledge and provide some additional knowledge and skills. This could include the study of non-standard properties, unusual residential building features and the technology of renewable energy sources integrated into the buildings themselves.

This final element of training should assure that the graduating energy inspector will be able to start assessing home with confidence in their ability to do so proficiently.

Energy inspector training details at this level include the methods for identifying and dealing with constructions that are not standard and residential property features that are unusual.

Theyll learn as well the identification and handling of hot water, heating and air conditioning systems that are not standard. Other energy inspector lessons will include identification and recommendation of renewable energy technology that can be integrated into residential construction.

These might include solar heat f water and space and photovoltaic panels. Graduates of this energy inspector training should leave confident that she or he is fully trained in RDSAP conventions and every aspect of performing as a DEA.

The last step of this energy inspector training will include completion of an actual inspection, with supervision - a requirement of a VRQ assessment.

Tips for seniors

Since January, millions of seniors have enrolled in the new Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit plan. However, the task of choosing a plan may seem daunting and can often be confusing for seniors even after they have enrolled.

The decision to participate is important, and careful consideration is vital to ensure a plan is chosen that best meets a customer's needs. To get help in finding the right plan, seniors and caregivers may want to consult their local pharmacists, who are the most accessible members of the health care delivery system. Many pharmacists are specifically trained on how to explain the Medicare Part D drug benefit to their customers and can help guide seniors through the process.

"Over the last several months, we have assisted many customers to help them better understand their choices under the Medicare Part D drug benefit. We will continue our efforts to help customers work their way through the large number of choices available to them," said Matt Leonard, Senior Vice President of Pharmacy at CVS/pharmacy. "One of the most important steps when choosing a plan is to ensure current prescription drugs are covered, and your local pharmacist is a great resource for that."

Because health needs can change quickly, a Medicare Part D plan may be appropriate even if a customer's costs and number of prescriptions are currently low. Once a decision has been made to enroll in a particular plan, the following facts should be taken into consideration to ensure a smooth process:

• Customers who enroll in a plan after the May 15, 2006, deadline will pay higher premiums, and their next opportunity to enroll will not be until November 15, 2006.

• Submit your enrollment application to the insurance plan of your choice as early in the month as possible. That way, there is enough time to mail out your new Medicare Prescription Drug Card and enter you into the system before your coverage begins on the first day of the following month.

• When first utilizing your new Medicare Prescription Drug Card, order your prescription refill while you still have a few days' supply remaining. This will ensure that you do not run out of your medication if your pharmacist needs time to research and resolve any issues pertaining to your new Medicare coverage.

Medicare Part D can greatly benefit seniors who take the time to make an informed decision. In addition to personalized assistance from a pharmacist, Medicare Information Centers are available in all CVS/pharmacy stores. The Centers explain how Medicare drug plans will work and assist customers in selecting a plan that best meets their needs.

Credit tips

:
If you are like many people, you either have bad credit or had bad credit at some point in your lifetime. The sad fact is most people are not educated about credit and their rights. America is filled with misconceptions, due to spin of the facts from both sides of the aisle. In reality, consumers become the prey from both credit repair companies and credit reporting agencies like Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. In this article, I am going to talk about some quick and simple facts that might help you maintain a better credit identity. With each passing day, credit factors more and more into our lives. Having at least decent credit is no longer something to have if you want a credit card, it can now cost you a job if your credit is poor.

Tip One: Collection Agencies Calling

Did you know that you could stop the collection agencies from calling? No, you don't need to declare bankruptcy or change your phone number. The fact is one simple letter can stop the calling, legally, dead in its tracks. At CreditLiberty. com, there is a sample letter to accomplish this task. This quick task will give your telephone a rest. If the collection agency that receives your letter continues to call, it can be penalized for doing so.

Tip Two: Removing Items / Correcting Items from your Credit Report

You are allowed to, legally, dispute any piece of data that's on your credit report. For example, you could dispute the following:

  • Account authenticity

  • Last payment details.

  • Account creation date.

  • Payment history.

  • Account balance.

  • Previous addresses.

  • Aliases.

  • Account status

  • And more.

Basically, anything you see in your credit report can be disputed with the credit-reporting agency that published it. Remember, the credit reporting agency has a vested interest in keeping as much negative information on you as possible. This is what gives their service value and how they make money. Today, these credit reporting agencies have put links on their website to dispute information, but you should still know how the law works, because they do go against it from time to time. Either way, don't sit in a cocoon thinking there's nothing you can do about items on your credit report—you can!

Tip Three: All credit is not the same.

There are three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Your credit report will be different on all three of these agencies. It could be minor difference or it could be major, such as bad accounts not being reported, good accounts not being reported or a mixture. When you apply for credit, except for a major purchase such as a home and sometimes a vehicle, the creditor will normally pull your credit from only one agency.

As I mentioned, you might have poor credit with one report, decent credit with another report and good credit with the last report. If the company pulls from report one, you get denied. However, if you find a company that pulls from report three, you may be approved. It's important to know what all three of your credit reports have in them. When you get denied, pay attention (or ask) for the credit reporting agency that was used. Write this down. If you have a credit file with another agency that's good and they did not pull it, try for credit elsewhere.

These are just three tips that can help you maintain a better credit identity and lifestyle.

The life cycle of science

"There was a time when the newspapers said that only twelve men understood the theory of relativity. I do not believe that there ever was such a time... On the other hand, I think it is safe to say that no one understands quantum mechanics... Do not keep saying to yourself, if you can possibly avoid it, 'But how can it be like that?', because you will get 'down the drain' into a blind alley from which nobody has yet escaped. Nobody knows how it can be like that."

R. P. Feynman (1967)

"The first processes, therefore, in the effectual studies of the sciences, must be ones of simplification and reduction of the results of previous investigations to a form in which the mind can grasp them."

J. C. Maxwell, On Faraday's lines of force

" ...conventional formulations of quantum theory, and of quantum field theory in particular, are unprofessionally vague and ambiguous. Professional theoretical physicists ought to be able to do better. Bohm has shown us a way."

John S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

"It would seem that the theory [quantum mechanics] is exclusively concerned about 'results of measurement', and has nothing to say about anything else. What exactly qualifies some physical systems to play the role of 'measurer'? Was the wavefunction of the world waiting to jump for thousands of millions of years until a single-celled living creature appeared? Or did it have to wait a little longer, for some better qualified system ... with a Ph. D.? If the theory is to apply to anything but highly idealized laboratory operations, are we not obliged to admit that more or less 'measurement-like' processes are going on more or less all the time, more or less everywhere. Do we not have jumping then all the time?

The first charge against 'measurement', in the fundamental axioms of quantum mechanics, is that it anchors the shifty split of the world into 'system' and 'apparatus'. A second charge is that the word comes loaded with meaning from everyday life, meaning which is entirely inappropriate in the quantum context. When it is said that something is 'measured' it is difficult not to think of the result as referring to some pre-existing property of the object in question. This is to disregard Bohr's insistence that in quantum phenomena the apparatus as well as the system is essentially involved. If it were not so, how could we understand, for example, that 'measurement' of a component of 'angular momentum' ... in an arbitrarily chosen direction ... yields one of a discrete set of values? When one forgets the role of the apparatus, as the word 'measurement' makes all too likely, one despairs of ordinary logic ... hence 'quantum logic'. When one remembers the role of the apparatus, ordinary logic is just fine.

In other contexts, physicists have been able to take words from ordinary language and use them as technical terms with no great harm done. Take for example the 'strangeness', 'charm', and 'beauty' of elementary particle physics. No one is taken in by this 'baby talk'... Would that it were so with 'measurement'. But in fact the word has had such a damaging effect on the discussion, that I think it should now be banned altogether in quantum mechanics."

J. S. Bell, Against "Measurement"

"Is it not clear from the smallness of the scintillation on the screen that we have to do with a particle? And is it not clear, from the diffraction and interference patterns, that the motion of the particle is directed by a wave? De Broglie showed in detail how the motion of a particle, passing through just one of two holes in screen, could be influenced by waves propagating through both holes. And so influenced that the particle does not go where the waves cancel out, but is attracted to where they co-operate. This idea seems to me so natural and simple, to resolve the wave-particle dilemma in such a clear and ordinary way, that it is a great mystery to me that it was so generally ignored."

J. S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

"...in physics the only observations we must consider are position observations, if only the positions of instrument pointers. It is a great merit of the de Broglie-Bohm picture to force us to consider this fact. If you make axioms, rather than definitions and theorems, about the "measurement" of anything else, then you commit redundancy and risk inconsistency."

J. S. Bell, Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics

"To outward appearance, the modern world was born of an anti religious movement: man becoming self-sufficient and reason supplanting belief. Our generation and the two that preceded it have heard little of but talk of the conflict between science and faith; indeed it seemed at one moment a foregone conclusion that the former was destined to take the place of the latter... After close on two centuries of passionate struggles, neither science nor faith has succeeded in discrediting its adversary.

On the contrary, it becomes obvious that neither can develop normally without the other. And the reason is simple: the same life animates both. Neither in its impetus nor its achievements can science go to its limits without becoming tinged with mysticism and charged with faith."

Pierre Thierry de Chardin, "The Phenomenon of Man"

I opened this appendix with lengthy quotations by John S. Bell, the main proponent of the Bohemian Mechanics interpretation of Quantum Mechanics (really, an alternative rather than an interpretation). The renowned physicist, David Bohm (in the 50s), basing himself on work done much earlier by de Broglie (the unwilling father of the wave-particle dualism), embedded the Schrцdinger Equation (SE throughout this article) in a deterministic physical theory which postulated a non-Newtonian motion of particles.

This is a fine example of the life cycle of scientific theories, comprised of three phases: Growth, Transitional Pathology, and Ossification.

Witchcraft, Religion, Alchemy and Science succeeded one another and each such transition was characterized by transitional pathologies reminiscent of psychotic disorders. The exceptions are (arguably) medicine and biology. A phenomenology of ossified bodies of knowledge would make a fascinating read.

Science is currently in its Ossification Phase. It is soon to be succeeded by another discipline or magisterium. Other explanations to the current state of science should be rejected: that human knowledge is limited by its very nature, that the world is inherently incomprehensible, that methods of thought and understanding tend to self-organize to form closed mythic systems and that there is a problem with the language which we employ to make our inquiries of the world describable and communicable.

Kuhn's approach to Scientific Revolutions is but one of many to issues of theory and paradigm shifts in scientific thought and its resulting evolution. Scientific theories seem to be subject to a process of natural selection very much as organisms are in nature.

Animals could be thought of as theorems (with a positive truth value) in the logical system "Nature". But species become extinct because nature itself changes (not nature as a set of potentials - but the relevant natural phenomena to which the species are exposed). Could we say the same about scientific theories? Are they being selected and deselected partly due to a changing, shifting backdrop?

Indeed, the whole debate between "realists" and "anti-realists" in the philosophy of Science can be settled by adopting this single premise: that the Universe itself is not immutable. By contrasting the fixed subject of study ("The World") with the transient nature of Science - anti-realists gained the upper hand.

Arguments such as the under-determination of theories by data and the pessimistic meta-inductions from past falsity (of scientific "knowledge") emphasize the transience and asymptotic nature of the fruits of the scientific endeavor. But such arguments rest on the implicit assumption that there is some universal, invariant, truth out there (which science strives to asymptotically approximate). This apparent problematic evaporates if we allow that both the observer and the observed, the theory and its subject, are alterable.

Science develops through reduction of miracles. Laws of nature are formulated. They are assumed to encompass all the (relevant) natural phenomena (that is, phenomena governed by natural forces and within nature). Ex definitio, nothing can exist outside nature - it is all-inclusive and all-pervasive, or omnipresent (formerly the attributes of the divine).

Supernatural forces, supernatural intervention, are contradictions in terms, oxymorons. If some thing or force exists - it is natural. That which is supernatural - does not exist. Miracles do not only contravene (or violate) the laws of nature - they are impossible, not only physically, but also logically. That which is logically possible and can be experienced (observed), is physically possible.

But, again, we are faced with the assumption of a "fixed background". What if nature itself changes in ways that are bound to confound ever-truer knowledge? Then, the very shifts of nature as a whole, as a system, could be called "supernatural" or "miraculous".

In a way, this is how science evolves. A law of nature is proposed or accepted. An event occurs or an observation made which are not described or predicted by it. It is, by definition, a violation of the suggested or accepted law which is, thus, falsified. Subsequently and consequently, the laws of nature are modified, or re-written entirely, in order to reflect and encompass this extraordinary event. Result: Hume's comforting distinction between "extraordinary" and "miraculous" events is upheld (the latter being ruled out).

Extraordinary events can be compared to previous experience - miraculous events entail some supernatural interference with the normal course of things (a "wonder" in Biblical terms). It is by confronting the extraordinary and eliminating its "abnormal" or "supernatural" attributes that science progresses as a miraculous activity. This, of course, is not the view of the likes of David Deutsch (see his book, "The Fabric of Reality").

Back to the last phase of this Life Cycle, to Ossification. The discipline degenerates and, following the "psychotic" transitional phase, it sinks into a paralytic state which is characterized by the following:

All the practical and technological aspects of the dying discipline are preserved and continue to be utilized. Gradually the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings vanish or are replaced by the tenets and postulates of a new discipline - but the inventions, processes and practical know-how do not evaporate. They are incorporated into the new discipline and, in time, are erroneously attributed to it, marking it as the legitimate successor of the now defunct, preceding discipline.

The practitioners of the old discipline confine themselves to copying and replicating the various aspects of the old discipline, mainly its intellectual property (writings, inventions, other theoretical material). This replication does not lead to the creation of new knowledge or even to the dissemination of old one. It is a hermetic process, limited to the ever decreasing circle of the initiated. Special institutions govern the rehashing of the materials related to the old discipline, their processing and copying. Institutions related to the dead discipline are often financed and supported by the state which is always an agent of conservation, preservation and conformity.

Thus, the creative-evolutionary dimension of the now-dead discipline is gone. No new paradigms or revolutions happen. The exegesis and replication of canonical writings become the predominant activities. Formalisms are not subjected to scrutiny and laws assume eternal, immutable, quality.

All the activities of the adherents of the old discipline become ritualized. The old discipline itself becomes a pillar of the extant power structures and, as such, is condoned and supported by them. The old discipline's practitioners synergistically collaborate with the powers that be: with the industrial base, the military complex, the political elite, the intellectual cliques in vogue. Institutionalization inevitably leads to the formation of a (mostly bureaucratic) hierarchy.

Emerging rituals serve the purpose of diverting attention from subversive, "forbidden" thinking. These rigid ceremonies are reminiscent of obsessive-compulsive disorders in individuals who engage in ritualistic behavior patterns to deflect "wrong" or "corrupt" thoughts.

Practitioners of the old discipline seek to cement the power of its "clergy". Rituals are a specialized form of knowledge which can be obtained only by initiation ("rites of passage"). One's status in the hierarchy of the dead discipline is not the result of objectively quantifiable variables or even of judgment of merit. It is the outcome of politics and other power-related interactions.

The need to ensure conformity leads to doctrinarian dogmatism and to the establishment of enforcement mechanisms. Dissidents are subjected to both social and economic sanctions. They find themselves ex-communicated, harassed, imprisoned, tortured, their works banished or not published, ridiculed and so on.

This is really the triumph of text over the human spirit. At this late stage in the Life Cycle, the members of the old discipline's community are oblivious to the original reasons and causes for their pursuits. Why was the discipline developed in the first place? What were the original riddles, questions, queries it faced and tackled? Long gone are the moving forces behind the old discipline. Its cold ashes are the texts and their preservation is an expression of longing and desire for things past.

The vacuum left by the absence of positive emotions is filled by negative ones. The discipline and its disciples become phobic, paranoid, defensive, and with a faulty reality test. Devoid of the ability to generate new, attractive content, the old discipline resorts to motivation by manipulation of negative emotions. People are frightened, threatened, herded, cajoled. The world is painted in an apocalyptic palette as ruled by irrationality, disorderly, chaotic, dangerous, or even lethal. Only the old discipline stands between its adherents and apocalypse.

New, emerging disciplines, are presented as heretic, fringe lunacies, inconsistent, reactionary and bound to regress humanity to some dark ages. This is the inter-disciplinary or inter-paradigm clash. It follows the Psychotic Phase. The old discipline resorts to some transcendental entity (God, Satan, or the conscious intelligent observer in the Copenhagen interpretation of the formalism of Quantum Mechanics). In this sense, the dying discipline is already psychotic and afoul of the test of reality. It develops messianic aspirations and is inspired by a missionary zeal and zest. The fight against new ideas and theories is bloody and ruthless and every possible device is employed.

But the very characteristics of the older nomenclature is in the old discipline's disfavor. It is closed, based on ritualistic initiation, and patronizing. It relies on intimidation. The numbers of the faithful dwindle the more the "church" needs them and the more it resorts to oppressive recruitment tactics. The emerging discipline wins by default. Even the initiated, who stand most to lose, finally abandon the old discipline. Their belief unravels when confronted with the truth value, explanatory and predictive powers, and the comprehensiveness of the emerging discipline.

This, indeed, is the main presenting symptom, the distinguishing hallmark, of paralytic old disciplines. They deny reality. They are rendered mere belief-systems, myths. They require the suspension of judgment and disbelief, the voluntary limitation of one's quest for truth and beauty, the agreement to leave swathes of the map in a state of "terra incognita". This reductionism, this schizoid avoidance, the resort to hermeticism and transcendental authority mark the beginning of the end.

Learning speed reading - online

Speedread America was America's first company to introduce sophistically developed speed reading courses. In 1997 the first online course was Speed Reading in Only One Hour, by Dr. Jay Polmar. The company's great success was increased through the publicity given by the Bottom Line magazine, a publication that served small businesses.

Slightly thereafter, Dr. Polmar's college/university speedreading course was completed for online distribution - Be Dynamic Through Speedreading is a self-taught 7 hour course that the Dr Polmar personally taught at Colleges and Universities in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Oregon and Hawaii. This educational program course includes speed reading, brain/mind methods of concentration, improvement of the memory and the recall function, development of the intuition to take exams, and also, the the art and science of how to write term papers and theses. This dynamic program also assisted with helping study take effective notes after studying the program and apply the techniques.

In 2000, the children's program, entitled If You Can Read This, You Can Read Faster was developed with the aid of a 12 year old secondary student, Ashley Johnson. Ashley assisted Dr Polmar to revise the One Hour Program, with added vocabulary, describing the psychology of education. It has helped thousands of youngsters to increase reading levels and teach speed reading to children.

Beginning in 2002, Dr. Polmar began writing of programs specially for use in Mexico. This included: The Gringo Guide to speaking Spanish (a course for tourists), the Legends Reading Program (a bilingual educational tool for students from 5 years old through college), Don Francisco's Guide to English, (a basic primer to the English Language and a Guide to English Slang), three translations of his speed reading courses into Spanish at primary, secondary and college levels, and a specialized course in English for the Tourism industry for Hotels and Restaurants.

These books took the dedication of Mexican Educators in the region of Guadalajara and Mexico City to complete. The Spanish/Latino versions help Spanish readers to become English-speaking for more success in their later lives.

The results of our speed reading and English programs amounts to reduction of students deserting school early, to work in farming or or doing work with minimal potentials. Fewer men and boys leaving Latin America for work in the United States and elsewhere. The opportunity is vast to use this program. to considerably improve students educational abilities here in Mexico, related to reading, speed reading, speaking English and more.

Favicon care that you are seen

Since Internet Explorer 5.0 has been brought out, there is a splendid new ' joke ' Favicon. Favicon (short for Favorites Icon) is a feature that makes it possible to associate a special logo or other small graphic with a web page.

Probably you also have these small pictures associated with some of your Favorites. Open your Favorites in Internet Explorer. Do you see that there are pictures for each Favorite? On many Favorites this picture is always the same. This is the standard icon of Internet Explorer. This Internet site did not made his own favicon.

At some Favorites you will see, hopefully, an other picture. These are sites which have established their own favicon. Do you notice how these Favorites are distinguish from other Favorites? The effort worth therefore, to make a favicon yourself for your Internet site. And this is possible without any cost.

Do you have no Favorites with a different picture, and Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher? Then just visit horses. co. uk/ and add it to your favourites. When you look again you will see that in the Favorites you have a special picture of a horse.

But how do you make such a favicon?

In the first place you must make an icon or have one. You must give this icon the name "favicon. ico". There are many sites where you can get free icons, e. g. iconarchive. com. Download one you like and rename it to "favicon. ico". You can devise yourself your own unique icon with a free icon editor, e. g. webattack. com/get/iconediter. shtml.

If you have finished your icon, place it in the same directory (map) as your homepage and put it on the server (upload/publish). If someone add your Internet site to there Favorites, it will show your favicon. If you test this yourself it is possible that nothing happens on your computer, because the website was already in your Favorites before you had a favicon. Just delete and add the website again as a Favorite. You can also call a friend (who has not add your site to his Favorites), and ask him to test the favicon for you.

How to get over being shy

Shyness is a problem that may lead to one missing out on all things that life offers.

Shy people are less likely to date and focus more on themselves than conversing with other people.

Chances are shy people are perceived as less friendly and boring because of his inability to speak in social undertakings. He also gives the impression of being inferior and less likely to succeed.

When you’re shy and introverted, there is a chance that you might need the help of some friends who might be able to bring you out of your shell. If you hate going to night clubs, you can perhaps attend class, find a work or go shopping. Introvert people may take a lot of effort to meet people. Having an outgoing friend may help ease the burden of shyness.

Because of their social uneasiness, women find shy men as unattractive. As a result, shy men are rarely given a chance by women to show his real self once she gets to know them.

Indeed, women will not consider continuing to spend their time with a negative and depressing person, However, a shy man faces the difficult problem of getting attention or actually even being noticed in the first place.

There are some places where shy men could actually begin casual friendships with the opposite sex. Attending groups or classes in any subject he wishes to pursue is a good place to start with.

This offers an opportunity to be in an environment of people with the same interest as you. In addition, if you do not spot someone, this is actually a win-win situation because you did something you like doing. When you see a nice girl, begin conversations with her.

Don't allow her shoo away from you. Your nice and calm approach won’t probably scare her away. Act naturally and as normal as possible. Be yourself and if she shows no interest in you, that's that. You got acquainted, you tried, try again!

Bear in mind that there are many more obstacles when you do find someone.

Question is whether it's possible for someone who is nice to develop confidence and outside assurance.

Many girls believe that they get bored of nice guys because they have no confidence, assertiveness and sexual passion, and that jerks do not know how to listen and only look for sex and act as though she was a piece of property to be used, abused and set on a shelf.

The desire to be trusted and liked for who you are is one element of shyness that may work to your advantage.

Google earth - zoom in

Cartography, uptil some time ago, was the only way of mapping or charting the globe. Map-reading and map-making is a science, the subtleties of which might not be available to every lay person. However, commercial-use maps have been available for a long time now. They are especially useful for tourists and for drivers. The major drawback of paper 2-D maps was that they have always been location or area specific. While an atlas, in theory, is a collection of maps of the whole globe, minute details can never be divined from them.

Google Earth, the latest software application from the Internet giant Google, aims to change all this. One of the main features of this application is that it promises you minutely detailed maps of any location in this world. Even pictures of man-made building, trees, parks, mountains are available, if you so desire, in 3-D. It’s a method of information gathering for any specific location in this world. Google Earth is quite simply, an extraordinary technological feat. At a stroke, it has dominated the cartographical business. All you need is a computer and an Internet connection. Just download the software and you can discover the world from your desktop.

Google Earth employs the use of satellite imagery, conventional maps and extremely sophisticated streaming technology to deliver the data to your desktop. Just type in the location in the software (powered by the award-winning Google Search) and the map is immediately available to you. Also, Google Search makes available a list of local facts about your search object. This technology makes searching for schools, parks, apartment buildings, even hotels and restaurants anywhere in the world extremely easy. Not only does it make driving instructions available to you, location to location, the software also allows you to rotate and full tilt the maps. This makes it easier for you to explore the urban location or terrain in 3-D detail.

A great number of customization tools are available for the individual user. You can bookmark or save your favorite searches and share them with family and friends. Google Earth also makes use of KML. It is a data exchange format which allows the user to add their annotations to the map or the view and also enables the sharing of this information. The map is formatted in the form of layers-with some features characteristic to each layer. For example, a specific layer would shoe the geographical features, while another will make information regarding schools, hospitals, shopping and airports available to you.

Making the perfect coffee baristas vs. coffee makers

There's nothing quite like a cup of coffee in the morning. The aroma alone seems to wake you up and fill you with energy.

How do you like your coffee? There are so many varieties anymore that it's hard to choose. It may even take an entire lifetime to taste all the kinds of coffee available today.

Where do you think the perfect cup would come from: a coffee maker or a person?

Coffee drinkers use coffee makers for the convenience these machines offer. Some critics, however, claim that the appliances sacrifice some of the taste. Recent innovations in coffee maker technology, however, try to prove the critics wrong.

Coffee makers now prepare each cup with amazing accuracy, getting the temperature right, the timing down to a split-second and the ingredients measured to near-perfection. Designed to make the best possible cup of coffee, these smart coffee makers make each cup as delicious as possible.

Regardless, coffee makers are still machines. And machines can only accomplish so much.

Coffee makers are confined by their functions. Beyond their functions, they can do nothing else. They can't customize each cup of coffee to fit your character; they make each cup the same way. Some people are comforted by the fact that each cup the coffee maker brews will turn out exactly the same. But are you?

Isn't uniqueness a part of living? And don't our little quirks determine who we are? Do we not all have an ideal blend of coffee in our minds?

Coffee makers do not really take that imagined ideal into account. They simply make a cup of coffee considered by their designers to be "perfect."

They are nothing more than tools, needing human guidance and input. And machines also have the inclination to break down. A coffee maker will, eventually, stop making that "perfect" cup of coffee.

How about a barista? Who are baristas?

A barista is a person dedicated to creating the perfect cup of coffee for the right person. They blend, brew, taste, test and do everything they can do ensure that your coffee is just right. They innovate, always thinking of new ways to delight you with that ever-flavorful coffee bean.

They are also human, so every cup will be unique -- a flavor infused with the humanity of the barista. However, their humanity is also a limitation. Unlike a coffee maker, baristas can't just start making coffee whenever you want them to. You can't just turn on a barista at any time of the day and tell the person to make you coffee.

Also, being human makes the barista imperfect. Unlike coffee makers, baristas cannot be preprogrammed to make the exact same cup of coffee every time.

Sometimes, the quirks of a barista make the coffee taste horrible. But sometimes, the barista includes just enough human quirks to make the cup just perfect. When you think about it, the coffee maker is necessary to modern baristas. They need all the help they can get, if they want to succeed.

Coffee makers and baristas work mutually. The barista chooses the ingredients, finds the right flavors for the right people and guarantees that the coffee will turn out with the quirks and personality of each person. The coffee maker takes those ingredients and transforms them into what the barista envisions -- the right cup for the right person.

Trouble shooting residential tanning beds

A residential tanning bed is often purchased by individuals who want to have a tan without bothering to dress up and go to a tanning salon. A tanning bed at home makes it more convenient for a person to get that wonderful tan. But a residential tanning bed also means additional responsibility for the owner. Technology is never perfect, like the humans who use them. Thus, the home tanning bed may be subject to several problems. Fortunately, the owner of such tanning bed need not call a technician every time something goes wrong with it. Here is a guide that will be useful for the owner of a residential tanning bed.

If the bed refuses to start or to turn on, there could be four possible reasons:

1. There is no power supplied to the bed

2. There is a bad relay

3. There is a loose at the relay

4. There is a loose wire at the dial timer

The owner must inspect the plug and the breaker to make sure that there is power going to the bed. If the relay is bad, then there is no other way to fix the bed but to replace the relay. As for loose wires, all the owner has to do is to tighten the loose connection.

If the lamps don’t light up, there are five possible causes:

1. Malfunctioning lamps

2. Malfunctioning ballast

3. Malfunctioning lamp holder

4. Malfunctioning starter

5. A loose wire at the ballast, or at the lamp holder or at the terminal

For any malfunctioning part of the tanning bed, the owner will need to replace it. The owner should not attempt to fix it by himself. For the loose wire, the owner may just tighten the loose connection.

If the bench lamps will not light up, the cause could be any of these:

1. The bench is not plugged into the canopy

2. A loose wire in the connector between the bench and the canopy

3. The wire in the bench-to-canopy connector may be burnt

The owner must check if the bench is securely plugged into the canopy. If not, he should correct the situation. The loose wire needed only a tightening. But if the wire is burnt, the owner must retrieve some electrical tools so that he can strip the wire and replace the connector.

If the lamps do not work well but the fans are working fine, there are only two things to check:

1. The relay

2. The wire either at the terminal block or the relay

The owner must check whether the relay is malfunctioning or not. If it is not working properly, this relay should be replaced. Any loose wire at the terminal block or at the relay can be corrected by tightening the connection.

For other tanning bed troubles, it is best that the owner consults the technician of the tanning bed supplier.

Operation of the spanish airport authority in madrid

Murcia is located approximately forty-five miles south of Alicante in the Costa Blanca region of Spain. It is situated along the beautiful coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. If you plan to travel to this southern region, though, you should know that the city of Murcia does not have an airport. Though called the Murcia Airport, this airport is actually located in San Javier which is approximately seventeen miles south of the Murcia. The airport is both an air base and a civilian airport and is operated by the Spanish Airport Authority headquartered in Madrid. The airport has grown from a small airport to a larger airport offering flights from all over the world. With such growth, there are now more choices in flights and airlines as well as a variety of discount airlines offering lower priced tickets.

This airport has become much more popular as tourists visit the southern area of the Costa Blanca. This area is particularly popular with travelers from the United Kingdom. Fortunately, as the popularity of this airport increases, the airlines expand their choices offered giving travelers more flights, services and cheaper fares from which to choose. Currently, around 848,000 people fly into Murcia annually and it continues to increase. In addition to the discount airlines, some charter airlines also operate out of the airport as this is a popular location for charter groups to the Costa Blanca region.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will need to find transportation to reach your final destination whether in Murcia or a nearby city. You should plan ahead, as there is not bus or train connection at the airport. You can take a taxi or arrange for a car hire or airport transfer, both of which must be reserved in advance. An airport transfer is probably the easiest and most cost-effective transportation to and from the airport. It is a good option for those traveling in large groups since a taxi or car can fit only four individuals at one time and a limited amount of luggage. Transfers are available to the larger surrounding cities as well as train stations. Contact the company directly or a travel agent to make the appropriate reservations and ensure your transportation is available when your flight lands.

If you choose to use a car hire, you can arrange for these services at the airport. It is a good idea, though, to make the reservation before you leave home to ensure a car is available and get the best price. Four car hire companies operate out of the airport: Centuaro, Europa, Solmar and Eurocar. All four companies can be found in the main terminal building, but of course you can contact them ahead of time and make your reservation. If you intend to travel throughout the Costa Blanca area, a car hire company may be the better transportation to choose.

Finding industrial and technical buyers on-line

Internet marketing strategies for manufacturers and industrial suppliers that want to generate more sales and increase marketing ROI

By Conrad Bailey

If your company sells industrial products or services, one thing is for certain, you should be using the Internet as a marketing tool to reach your target audience. After all, over 87% of engineers and other industrial buyers report using the Internet on a regular basis to find the products, services and solutions they need. The manufacturers and suppliers that know how to effectively reach these ready to buy prospects through effective marketing programs are the ones making the most profit from the Internet.

However, reaching qualified buyers, at the right time, is becoming increasingly difficult as more manufacturers and other industrial suppliers join the on-line marketplace. The competition has become so intense for certain products and services, many companies are beginning to doubt the Internet as being a profitable marketing tool.

Even programs that use to be extremely profitable for a lot of manufacturers, such as pay-per-click, lacks the clout it use to have in the eyes of a lot of industrial suppliers. Most of them blame it on the competition. But that is not really the problem. The real problem is the company's inability to adapt to a constantly changing marketplace. And unquestionably, no marketplace changes faster or more frequently than the Internet.

Increase Your Marketing Channels

Relying on pay-per-click, search engines, banner ads or your Web site is not enough. You have to versify your entire marketing approach in order to compete on the Internet today, as well as in the future. If you expect the major search engines to be your Web site's main source of traffic, you are relying too much on one marketing channel. You must increase those channels to generate traffic from multiple sources all over the Internet. The Web site's that are most versatile in terms of marketing, will develop the strongest competitive advantage possible over their competitors.

Probably the single biggest reason why most manufacturers do not versify their marketing is they prefer to keep things simple. So they invest most of their marketing dollars in one or two programs, and overlook smaller traffic sources that could significantly increase their ROI.

Indeed, keeping it simple is certainly an ideal approach, but it does not mean you have to limit your marketing channels. The key is to find smaller, more flexible search engines, directories or portals that reach your target audience. You can and still should utilize the major search engines to promote your site. Just don't overlook the others just because their too small to work with. Together they can generate much better results than any single source, no matter how big. Moreover, the competition will be a lot less, so the ROI will be significantly improved.

Finding Marketing Channels That Work

Obviously, not all marketing opportunities are equally effective. You want to find marketing plans or programs that are simple to utilize, measurable, and of course profitable. No matter what audience you are trying to reach, there are dozens, perhaps even hundreds of Web site's that are ideal marketing channels to promote your company. Don't make the mistake of ignoring a site just because of its small audience. You need to look at the whole picture and see the real value of these sites.

As I mentioned earlier, most leading manufacturers don't even bother with advertising on Web sites that reaches just a small fraction of their target audience. Yet, these smaller sites offer by far the greatest profit potential. Consider not only the excellent advertising value these sites usually offer, but also the enormous potential they often have to reach even more of your prospects in the near future. After all, as their visitors and audience increases, so will your ROI due to several reasons.

A significant advantage of advertising on smaller Web sites is the relationship factor. Imagine being the original advertiser on a Web site that once had a small audience but now reaches millions of your prospects. There will certainly be perks. I know myself I will not forget the original advertisers of my own site. Their support was vital to my Web site's success and I make sure these companies are rewarded with exclusive advertising benefits.

Internet Advertising and Marketing

Everybody on the Internet today has their own opinion about which advertising or marketing methods are best. Many swear by text link advertising and search engine optimization. Others like pay-per-click or opt-in email. And there are many manufacturers that still prefer banner advertising, most likely for branding purposes. But who cares what works for somebody else? All that really matters is making it work for your company - period.

Different Web sites offer different advertising opportunities. Some sites will only accept banner ads while others will only present text link ads. Then there are directories or search engines that may even accept both. The point is, if the terms are right, then you must be flexible and be willing to advertise in the manner these sites require. Again, all that matters is reaching your target audience while increasing ROI. Whether it be via a banner advertisement, text link, featured listing, or whatever.

Yes, it will take some serious time and effort to find the right marketing channels and advertising opportunities. But the benefits are certainly worth it if you are responsible for marketing or increasing traffic to your company's Web site.

Just look at the whole thing as if your building a chain one link at a time with each link strengthening the entire system the bigger and longer the chain gets. This chain will undeniably result in a flood of ongoing traffic from multiple sources that will consistently increase your site's visibility and competitive advantage on the Internet.

In contrast, your competitors will be limited to the one or two big marketing channels they rely on for 90% or more of their Web site's traffic and perhaps their survival. They will be constantly subjected to price increases, growing competition, and ironically the need to find other marketing channels.

The unintentional delivery of post hypnotic suggestion

Introduction: "Until 1935 physicians relied heavily on God and the deep seated, instinctive will of patients to survive grave threats to life. Since the advent of sulphonamides, antibiotics, corticoids, blood banks, biologic monitoring devices, intensive care units and computers, there has been a tendency to forget the patient. This is a plea for the recognition of the fact that patients are people who can be frightened to death, condemned to long hospitalization, or helped to overcome great odds according to the quality of the information they receive from their attendants."

Ernest Rossi and David Cheek.

It is not necessary for hospital staff (or any other person for that matter) to be trained in the formal hypnosis models in order to deliver effective hypnotic suggestions to another person. These things are already happening all the time. I am sure I am not the first person to suggest that giving staff formal hypnosis training would actually act to help them stop giving hypnotic suggestions that inadvertently interfere with the well being of their patients.

Whilst the terms "hypnosis" and "hypnotic suggestion" will conjure up different things for different people, I suspect that most laymen will consider hypnosis to be a special or even magical skill that lies in the possession of very few. For the sake of this essay, I would like to consider hypnosis as simply referring to a communication that asserts an effect upon the recipient's psychophysiology.

By "effective hypnotic suggestion" I do not intend to imply that this refers to only beneficial suggestions and outcomes, but rather is a suggestion that creates a psycho-physiological change in the recipient, regardless of whether the psycho-physiological change is beneficial or not. I also recognize that these changes can occur independently of the intentions of the speaker. It was several years ago that myself and two hospital porters were taking a partially sedated patient to the operating rooms for surgery when a senior nurse called out to him, "Good luck, James!" A few seconds later as we moved down the corridor, James looked up to me and asked, "Do I really need luck? What does she know [that I don't know]?"

Awareness Under Chemical Anaesthesia: "…particularly impressive have been some of the reports about what we may call 'fatty' comments where a surgeon made an insulting remark in reference to someone's weight during surgery. It is particularly impressive that such comments, unconsciously registered, seem to be capable of causing continuing psychosomatic problems and can be traumatic enough to cause post operative complications, depression and vegetative responses. A lawsuit has now been settled out of court concerning a 'beached whale' comment made by a surgeon around an anaethetised patient, which was recalled several days later by the patient and confirmed by a nurse who was present."

It is my experience that all too often, innocuous and seemingly friendly remarks and communications have an adverse effect upon the patient, independent of the member of staff's intention and even if not directed at the patient himself. Imagine for example the simple comment from a tired nurse to a colleague as she expresses, "You know, I cannot wait for this shift to be over!" It may be just that she is tired, or maybe that she has a great party to go to, but how would such a comment be viewed (and felt) by the overhearing patient who owing to their condition has been dependent of this particular nurse all day?

Such a comment, without negative intention, may be the difference that tilts the patient towards helplessness and thus depression and impedes recovery.

A while ago I asked a colleague to return to me some important research papers I had lent to him. I wasn't going to see him again until the following Wednesday and I asked that he return them to me then.

"I'll try to remember to bring them" he told me. My brain registered the word "try" and inside my head I pictured him saying to me next Wednesday, "I am sorry, but I did try to remember." I strongly suspected that without intervention, I would not be seeing my research papers when I needed them.

Hypnotists will often utilize the word "try" to imply failure as it provides permission to fail. People will also hear it differently. For example, the stage hypnotist in the process of selection of volunteers may well have the audience collectively clasping their hands together, being urged to do so ever tighter and tighter. And then, with the same amount of urgency, the hypnotist will suggest that they all now try to pull their hands apart. Now, there is no secret to this. Whilst in a big enough audience, there may well be one or two people genuinely hypnotically stuck with their hands together, what is going on for the majority who remain standing, hands apparently stuck is that they haven't been told to pull their hands apart. Of course, they really could if they wanted to, but what they are doing is the activity of trying.

I have often heard inexperienced hypnotists tell their clients to "try to relax" and on one occasion, to an already happily relaxed client, "try to relax and try to forget about all your worries and concerns that will stop you from going into trance." The physiological shift in this client from one of comfort to discomfort was noticeable as he was inadvertently reminded to consider all the worries and concerns that might prevent him from relaxing further.

In any form of health care provision, rapport is very important as people tend to move away (either physically or mentally) from anyone that makes them feel bad - this may play a huge factor in the non-compliance behaviours so often witnessed in health care environments. In the West, with the impact of science and anaesthesia, medical treatments are not expected to hurt. An effective medicine no longer needs to taste very bitter in order that it is perceived as being a good medicine. It is unfortunate then that within the strong hierarchies that exist within hospital cultures we persistently find a small but significant number of individuals who wield their status and power to coerce, intimidate and dominate junior colleagues. It would be hard to correlate, but I cannot help but think that such behaviours have a knock on effect throughout the social system of the care environment ultimately manifesting as delayed healing times in the care recipients.

A mistake that is common to many therapists of various fields is the operating belief that the subject or patient responds to the techniques employed by the therapist rather than to the quality of the delivery and the behaviour of the therapist themselves. The relationship the therapist forms with the patient is also critical in this context. In the case of hypnotherapy, a situation commonly arises whereby the subject sits there with eyes compliantly closed as the hypnotist laboriously reads a pre-written script at the subject. Meanwhile, the client is running an internal dialogue to the effect of, "this isn't working, I cannot be hypnotized." To hypnotists who do read scripts at the clients, I offer this advice. Just send them a copy of the script so they can read it themselves and save themselves on the bus fare.

With an ever increasing emphasis on standardization of medical treatments we see a two fold result occurring. Firstly, and most importantly, the overall standard in the delivery of care countrywide increases. But secondly, we also witness a squashing of ingenuity and creatively it becomes increasingly harder to be outstanding in the field when the behaviours of care staff are reduced to that of a set of automated responses set against sets of automated criteria. Of course the net effect of all this is that the person that is behind the set of symptoms and criteria is frequently forgotten. And, with the increase in the use of modern technology to monitor and measure these patients we have a situation best summed up by neurologist Dr Richard Cytowic: "Care is something we deliver when we don't have a machine to do it for us."

When a patient is in intensive care - his blood pressure is monitored both by automated cuff and via an indwelling arterial catheter; his breathing maintained and supported by a ventilator, his blood pressure and renal function supported by inotropes, parenteral nutrition supplied intravenously, pressure sore risk eliminated by use of flotron mattresses etc etc, when surrounded by all this life-supporting technology and monitoring, it is easy to understand how medical and nursing staff dismiss something as apparently trivial as their use of their voices as an aid to healing and recovery.

As one surgeon suggested to me in ITU - we don't really make people well here, the body heals itself, we just try to keep them alive long enough to allow that to happen.

Two useful patterns utilized in hypnosis are those of the contingent and adjunctive suggestion. These are common in everyday language and are an exceptionally effective hypnotic tool. Most people use these patterns every day without realizing that they are doing so. The effectiveness of this type of suggestion comes from the way that the suggestion is given on the back of an activity or behaviour that is already occurring. For example, "When you are in town, will you please buy me a pint of milk" and "If you go past the kitchen, will you make me a cup of tea." Now an aspect of these suggestions to bear in mind is that they are not asked as questions, in so much that they are not stated with an upward inflection (indicating a question) but rather with a downward inflection (command). There is no need to overemphasise the intonation, as a casual tone will usually suffice.

In the anaesthetic rooms, I often hear anaesthetists say something like, "as I inject this you will begin to drift off to sleep" and then stop there, missing a rich opportunity to deliver additional suggestion. Some will encourage their patient to try to count from one to ten to see how far they can get - few make it past 7, as intravenous barbiturate has a rapidly sedating effect.

Since drifting off to sleep is an inevitability and is perfectly predictable in terms of the anaesthetic rooms, we have ourselves an opportunity to create a chain of suggestion...continued....

Ten watertight lux╨т yacht builders

While the size of one's boat may set yachtsmen apart, the underlying commonality is that all yacht owners are seamen at heart. Making a big splash on the marine scene today calls for something of substantive value. While every yacht out there is not a superyacht of 100 feet or more, or a mega-superyacht exceeding 200 feet in length, it should be equally superb as a looker and a performer.

Here is a recap of some the yacht builders we presented over the past year or so. Each one is a shipbuilder of worldwide acclaim. Trinity Yacht can produce a 400-foot-long vessel. Azimut Yachts is renowned for its advancements in soundproofing technology. Christensen Shipyards has built more yachts measuring 120 feet or longer of composite materials than any other builder. The Burger Boat Company built numerous vessels for the U. S. during wartime. The firm also produced the first all-steel-welded hull made in the U. S. All are capable of fulfilling a buyer's vision of a "dreamboat," whether it is a power or a sailing yacht.

Presenting the newest, the best, and the most innovative in all matters of luxury lifestyle is a never-ending process. So stay tuned. More noteworthy and up-and-coming yacht builders will be introduced throughout 2007 - and beyond.

Azimut Yachts offer the best combination of features and benefits to its lucky owners. The Azimut 85, which premiered at the Genoa Boat Show in October 2005, is luxury afloat at its finest. The 85's length is actually a tad longer than its name and 22 feet wide. Stephano Righini designed the exterior and Carlo Galeazzi manned the interior. The advanced soundproofing techniques and windows on both decks are only two of the yacht's noteworthy and unique features.

Marquis Yacht is a U. S.-based firm that is definitely on the rise. With each release, beginning with the Carver 59 Marquis, the company is diligently establishing its niche for launching innovative, Italian-inspired-designed yachts. The 59 features twin 660 horsepower Cummins QSM11 diesel inboards, with the option to upgrade to twin 825 horsepower MTU Series 60 diesel inboards. The ship's overall length is nearly 60 feet with platform and a waterline length that exceeds 45 feet. Standard features include a hydraulic swim platform and fore and aft shore-power ties.

Saying it in Italian just sounds more romantic than saying it in English. But no matter how you say it, the 44.8-meters long Gran Finale by Delta Marine is one beautiful boat! Launched in 2002, this tri-deck is the winner of the 2003 "Best Motor Yacht Over 38 Meters" by Showboats International. Its all-encompassing craftsmanship is perhaps the boat's greatest benefit. However, providing a smooth ride at a cruising speed of 18 knots and a top speed over 20 knots, with its twin Caterpillar 3512B engine, is quite impressive too.

International Yacht Collection is a fourfold specialist in the luxury boating industry. The firm is capable of managing and maintaining a yacht for personal or corporate owners; taking a boating project from inception to design to completion; offering brokering services; and yacht-chartering specialists for either corporate or personal needs.

The Rasselas, the latest vessel launched by Feadship De Vries of the Netherlands, is the most technologically advanced yacht to ever float across the waters. Strident progress has been made in shipbuilding technology over the past 10 years, and this craft has incorporated it all. The innovative technology addresses environmental and operational issues, reduces noise level, and facilitates maintenance and favorably. Specifically, it burns fuel more efficiently and is easier to keep in tip-top condition. Measuring out at 62 meters, it is nearly 30 feet longer than the previous Rasselas.

Thank goodness the Burger Boat Company was revitalized in the early 90s and put back in the waters of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, by its new owners, David Ross and Jim Ruffolo. Founded in 1863 by Henry B. Burger, the contributions this organization made to the U. S. and to the boating industry are historic, patriotic and most inventive. From 1870 to the turn of the century, the firm specialized in manufacturing steamers, tugs, scows, schooners and barges to support the industrialization efforts of the USA. During World War I, Burger manufactured 22 vessels for the U. S. Navy and Emergency Corps. READ MORE

When the topic of the conversation turns to yachts, the size of a vessel is generally at the top of the pecking list. However, the more significant issue regarding long-term value is the materials used in the construction of ships. Christensen Shipyards has built more 120-plus-feet yachts with composite materials than any shipbuilder in the world. Composite materials eliminate rust and corrosion and provide better insulation and strength compared to ships built from aluminum and steel. This makes overall maintenance easier and extends the life of a ship threefold compared to those predominantly constructed with metals. Christensen Shipyards is a certified shipbuilder by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), which was established in 1862 and is the governing agency for safety standards of the marine industry. ABS is a non-profit organization with 150 offices in 70 countries.

Trinity Yacht encourages all yachtsmen to have it your way! Whether you are seeking a 72-footer, a 200-footer or a whopping 400-footer, your selection is built and designed to meet and, probably, exceed your expectations. Trinity can place bid on designs drawn up independently from outside sources or provide patrons with designs stemming from either its Victory Lane or Global Explorer series.

It is very difficult to begin a sentence with a company that prefers not to capitalize its name or products, such as eLuxury, iPod, or oceAnco. However, what oceAnco does capitalize wisely are its resources when it comes to designing and building superyachts. The firm has built some of the finest 50-meter-plus vessels to clientele around the world. Its main office is in Monaco, and its shipyard is based in Albasserdam, Holland. The yacht builder's Web site boasts of 16 launched boats. Over the past three years, oceAnco has launched three stunning 60-meter-plus yachts: the Lady Lola at 62.6 meters, the Alfa Four at 60 meters, and the Dilbar at 66 meters. The Dilbar has two master suites and a dip pool on its sundeck that is over 15 feet wide. Mr. Alberto Pino is the interior designer of the steel hull with an aluminum superstructure, and oceAnco is both the naval architect and the exterior designers.

Princess Yachts International is a shipbuilder with over 40 years of know-how. The company, which began in 1965 and was known as Marine Projects (Plymouth) Ltd., originally specialized in making 20- to 30-foot ships. Today the company is regarded as one of the world's most prominent manufacturers of Flybridge yachts and "V" class sports yachts. Yacht building began in 1970 with the launching of the Princess 32. Over the next decade, approximately 1,200 Princess 32s were ordered and sold.
